The impetus for Lindbergh's historic flight across the Atlantic in 1927 was The Orteig Prize of $25,000 for the first successful flight from New York to Paris. Raymond Orteig received this plaque from The Hotel Men's Association at a dinner in his honor at The Waldorf Astoria in November 1927. Lindbergh and many other dignitaries were in attendance. Orteig owned The Brevoort Hotel, where this plaque hung until the hotel was demolished in 1954. |
