Captain A.H. Embler Presentation Sword
inscribed "presented to Captain A.H. Embler/ by the/ 1st Co. Gov (erner's). Foot Guard/ Hartford Conn/ May 5 1880"

Embler entered the Civil War as a 1st Sargent in the 71st Regiment, NY State Militia. Severely wounded at the first battle of Bull Run, he was soon promoted to Captain. He was again wounded at Antietam. After recovery he served on the staff of General Gibbons who lead the 2nd Division of the 2nd Army Corps. He was present when the rebel flags captued at Appomattox were turned over to Presedent Johnson. He received the brevet of lietenant-colonel from Secretary of War Stanton for meritorious services rndered on the field of battle.

condition: attic found, fully engraved blade straight and tip in tact with several fingerprint size areas of brown oxidation (not advanced to pitting). The scabbard gilt with silverplated mounts- the gilt now mostly muted, worn or oxidized off. The hilt apparently silverplated with shark skin grip.
