estimate 2000/3000

SOLD $16,000

Jesse James, the most notorious outlaw of the American West was the best known member of The James-Younger Gang, The Youngers were apprehended shortly after the botched September 7th, 1876 bank robbery in Northfield, Minnestota. Sentenced to life in prison at the Stillwater Prison, they all signed Admiral Dots book on January 18th, 1882 as documented in local newspaper accounts. Bob Younger died in prison in 1889, Cole and Jim were paroled in 1901, but Jim could not cope and killed himself the next year. Cole lived until 1916.

In January of 1882 Jessie James remained on the loose but only had the Ford brothers left from his gang. In the morning of April 3rd Bob Ford shot Jesse James in the back of the head. He immediately wired the governer, claiming the $5,000 reward. After being arrested for murder- and subsequently granted clemency by the governer- he went on to join a Wild West show with his brother re-enacting the murder. The subject signature is dated December 13th, eight months after the murder. Bob Ford became something of a celebrity as "the man who killed Jesse James" and lived a colorful life in the West. He was murdered in his saloon in Creede, Colorado in 1892. This album may be the only individual item extant with four signatures from the James-Younger Gang.
